Making Solar Affordable

I haven’t really gotten into the whole group-buying phenomenon brought on by sites like Groupon and LivingSocial. I certainly see the value in getting together a bunch of people to make a group purchase that gives them the buying power of a large company. But why use this power for restaurant discounts when it could be used for larger purchases that translate into huge savings – like buying solar? Well one company has done just that.

1 Block Off The Grid (or 1BOG) is a group buying site that allows people to broadcast their interest for solar retro-fitting. Fellow community members can then jump on the band wagon until there are enough people for 1BOG to flex its negotiating muscle. They have an awesome slideshow and video that explain how it all works and a pretty slick website as well (which is how we judge all companies:). Even if you don't want to use 1BOG to buy solar, it's an awesome place to get the low down on how solar works and dispel many of those myths about solar, like how it doesn't work in cloudy climates.

Even for those not interested or able to outfit their home with solar panels, I encourage you to check out the site. It's a great example of a website that has compressed a ton of information into a fun, visually engaging and often fun format.
