Why Fashionable is Falling Out of Fashion

Created by OnlineMBA.com

This weekend I was having lunch with a friend when I saw a girl with boho pants walk by. My friend remarked that he had never seen them before and I said “Oh they’re really old school. They were popular about 4 years ago.” Understandably, my friend laughed at me for considering 4 years to be old, causing me to realize that I had become a victim of fast fashion.

Apparently there was a time when trends lasted entire decades as opposed to one year. We don’t look at bell bottom jeans and think, oh that was so 1965, because it lasted for the vast majority of the 60s. Now we have trends that last 6 months. Granted I am thrilled to think that grown men wearing spandexed skinny jeans will at some point fade into distant and sad memory, but what pains me is to think of millions if not trillions of pounds of denim that will be tossed out.

The fact is that fast consumption of any kind, whether it be cotton for fabric or fossil fuels for gasoline, takes a toll on our resources and can damage the environment faster than it can repair itself. The good news is that avoiding the trend wagon is not only good for the environment, but also for your wallet (as per usual).

Plus avoiding trends and instead focusing on what styles work best for you is an excellent way to prevent the pain induced by looking on photos of your former ‘fashionable’ self. I’m talking to you, skinny jean boys.
